How to convert a Qix boardset to play Zookeeper. A Qix boardset is nearly identical to Zookeeper, with two main differences. Firstly, Taito added a "coin processor" board to the set to prevent people from converting their Qix boards to Zookeeper. The game either won't run without it or will run, but do funny stuff like add free credits and cycle the test menu selection continuously. I figured out what they did and patched one of the ROMs to eliminate the need for the coin processor. You can download the patched ROM from here. http://arcadecollecting.com/info/Zookeeper-no68705.zip Secondly, Zookeeper has more video ROM than a Qix board was designed to handle. To accommodate the extra ROM, Taito added a "video ROM expansion" board. Since you don't have one of these, you'll have to make a little daughterboard yourself and make a few wire mods to the main ROM board. Here's a schematic detailing the daughterboard and the mods. http://arcadecollecting.com/qix2zk.gif You'll notice there's no socket U2 on the Qix ROM board. There's a 74138 at U2. You'll have to remove that chip and add a socket where it used to be and plug your new daughterboard into U1 and U2. You'll also notice little odd jumper packs in sockets U22 and U29. You'll need to remove those and jumper the pins as shown in the diagram. Now that that's all done, all you need to do is burn a set of Zookeeper ROMs (using my ROM19 from above). The ROMs that would normally go into U3-U10 of the daughterboard should be plugged into U3-U10 of the Qix's ROM board. If you need to yell at me, email tim@arcadecollecting.com
